Some things are dangerous. Full stop and no way of getting around it. Like skydiving, fighting, and, of course, riding motorcycles. But every once in a while, a motorcycle crash that should have killed or seriously injured a rider turns into a silly anecdote to be repeated and brought up at parties. Lucky for one rider near Buenos Aires, a ninja-esque flip not only made for some pretty cool video, but it also saved his skin in what would have been a pretty nasty wreck.

A motorcycle rider narrowly avoided injury or worse by flipping over a hatchback after a crash

Well over 5,000 motorcycle riders die in crashes every year in the US. It’s not just the US, either. Motorcyclists accept the risk for the fun or traffic-thrashing mobility all over the world daily. But one rider just outside of Buenos Aires, Brazil, learned just how dangerous it can be to swing a leg rather than slip behind the wheel. 

A shocking security camera video shows a small silver hatchback making an unprotected right turn across two lanes of oncoming traffic. But rather than wait for the all-clear, the hatchback simply went for it. Unfortunately for the rider on the small motorcycle, that put the little car right in his path.

Boom. The rider slammed into the hatchback at speed. Now, a motorcycle crash like that could easily have been the end of someone’s life, not just their days behind a set of handlebars. But like something out of a Marvel superhero movie, the rider flies over the bars, does a complete rotation, and lands upright. That’s right. A flip like you might expect from Spider-Man or a straight-up ninja.

This was a best-case scenario in what could have been a terrible, even fatal scenario. At the crux of things, motorcycle and moped riders accept the risk. But that doesn’t excuse absent-mindedness in a car, like that of this hatchback driver. They made a reckless move on a relatively deserted road and nearly killed someone in the process. Fortunately, this stunt-quality flip saved the rider. As for the bike, it’s likely a write-off.
