Getting geared up for the ride can be a hassle. It takes time to don your armored gear, gloves, full-face helmet, supportive boots, and whatever else you might need to hit the road. But if you ever needed a better example of the benefits of good motorcycle gear and a helmet camera, you need only watch this terrifying hit-and-run crash. It’s so bad that the offending driver was arrested for attempted murder.

A Nissan driver with road rage struck a motorcyclist and dragged him in a brazen hit-and-run attempted murder

A motorcycle rider in Riverside, California, was preparing to filter to the front of an intersection when a black Nissan sedan cut him off. The maneuver forced the biker to pull around the discourteous driver. When he reached the front of the line, he looked back at the Nissan and shook his head. Needless to say, the driver wasn’t happy.

The Nissan driver, 32-year-old Gary Delandro, rolled down his window to scream at the motorcyclist. After a brief, albeit heated, exchange, the two carry on. But the Delandro didn’t let it go. He snaked through traffic until he caught up to the rider. The motorcyclist’s helmet camera captured the violent hit-and-run incident that followed.

One moment, the rider is upright and facing an intersection. The next, the motorcyclist was on his side with part of his body under the Nissan. “It was a few seconds [but] it felt like forever,” the rider said in an interview after the event. “He dragged me. I felt like he was stepping on the gas,” the unidentified motorcyclist said.

He continued to describe his asphalt nightmare. “I started slipping, and I could see the undercarriage of the car. I went from being mad to being scared.” After dragging the motorcyclist for some distance, the hit-and-run crash mercifully ended. “When we finally stopped, I got up and ran to the sidewalk. He fled the scene,” the rider recounted. The Nissan turned its wheels and sped away.

Delandro eventually turned himself in to the Riverside Police Department. The police arrested him and charged him with attempted murder after his display of disregard for human life. Of course, there’s a lesson in nearly every horrible road event. For starters, the helmet camera captured the hit-and-run, providing vital evidence.

However, the horrifying event dragged the rider across the pavement. While he suffered road rash injuries, he was able to stand up and flee the violent rampage. It’s a testament to good gear. Remember, riders: dress for the slide, not for the ride.
