A food delivery gone wrong in the middle of a Missouri highway. A semi truck trailer burned to a crisp—you might say the slabs of beef were beyond well done. But as more details emerge, it’s clear the firefighter who responded to the scene may not have been mourning the mouth-watering loss in the same way as the rest of us: “Probationary” firefighter Jenna Ulrich is a vegan.

The department that responded to the burning truck was the Doolittle Rural Fire Protection District. Glenn Ulrich is a firefighter with the department, and now his daughter is following in his footsteps. During this accident—her very first call—the younger Ulrich was assigned to the hose line. Someone snapped a picture, and the department couldn’t resist some ribbing on social media later.

“Nothing says ‘welcome to the fire service’ like sending the probie to put out 40,000 pounds of flaming ribeye! Probationary Firefighter Jenna Ulrich is the only vegan on our department—so naturally, her very first fire involved a tractor-trailer carrying 40,000 pounds of ribeye steak.”

The community loved the Facebook post. Comments included “Plot twist!” and “Irony at its best.” There were plenty of messages like “Great work Jenna!” and “Get it girl.”

That said, most folks were mourning the destruction of perfectly good meat: “Any BBQ left?,” “I like mine well done anyways,” and “I would like to point out at one point in this fire there was a time where all the steaks were perfectly cooked to everyone’s likings.” The story was so thoroughly flavored with irony that Fox News even picked it up.
