Considering renting your car out on Turo? Listen up.

Over the past few years, Turo has become a popular platform for car owners and renters alike to score a deal on a temporary ride. While some people simply rent their car out when they’re not using it, others have become miniature car rental agencies, operating fleets of vehicles that can be rented through the app.

Naturally, there are some problems that can come with operating this sort of business. Still, a considerable amount of Turo fleet owners have found success turning their vehicles into rentals through the app.

One issue that comes with operating this sort of business is the amount of time that one rents a car. Typically speaking, people in major tourist hotspots will only want the car for a few days or over the weekend. This presents a problem for Turo owners — how do you get your renters to take the car for more days? Now, a user on TikTok has the answer.

How Does This Turo Host Secure Longer Reservations?

In his TikTok, the self-proclaimed “Vegas Turo King” Erik Lizar (@vegasturoking) explains how he gets his customers to rent cars for a longer time.

The trick? Getting them to “act immediately” with a limited time special.

“I’ve been a Turo host for 10 years, and I’m gonna give you guys one of the many things that I do to increase utilization, customer satisfaction, increase reviews,” the TikToker starts.

As a Turo host, Lizar knows the game and how people tend to return vehicles on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

In order to get customers to extend these rentals, Lizar suggests offering a price discount to get them to “act immediately.”

“You’re gonna say, ‘Hey, there’s a special promotion going on for the next two hours. If you’re interested in extending your reservation, for one, two, three days, let me know right away so I can discount my daily price for you to extend,” Lizar explains.

By creating a limited time offer, this will entice Turo renters to act quickly to book.

“That is going to encourage your customers to act immediately,” he continues.

What Happens Next?

If everything goes according to plan, the customers will message the host back with interest.

“Hey, yes, I am interested in extending for one or two or three days,” the customer replies back.

When that happens, Lizar suggests asking the customer to see what the Turo quote is to extend.

“Let me ask you, have you already gone in and mocked up how much it is to extend for one, two, or three days?” Lizar responds.

When they confirm that they have seen the price, the host can ask how much doing so will cost.

With this information the host can adjust the daily rate.

“Hurry up, you’re gonna drop your price, whatever dollar amount that you want to drop your daily rate. Then immediately write them back,” Lizar explains.

From there, the host messages the customer back and tells them to check out the new price. They’ll see the discounted price and, if everything works as expected, extend their rental.

“Customers will love you, you’ll increase your revenue, you’ll decrease your workload, you’ll increase your 5-star reviews. And so much more. I’ve done this same exact thing every single week for at least a year. It really works, I promise you. You’ll get a good chunk of your customers extending. Thank me later,” Lizar writes in the video’s caption.

Are There Other Tips For Extending Rentals?

Internet discussion among Turo hosts indicates that they prefer longer rentals over shorter ones. This makes sense — the more time that a customer has with a car, the less time the host must spend cleaning and maintaining it. Not only that, but continuing rentals mean guaranteed income.

“Personally as a host these are the trips I prefer. Longer rentals to me pose less of a ‘risk.’ Usually someone is renting the car just to have one available. The likelihood of them putting a massive amount of wear and tear and miles is unlikely,” one Turo Host shares on Reddit

This shared feeling means there’s considerable online conversation about how to get customers to rent for longer periods of time.

According to Turo, the service explains how hosts can provide monthly and other long-term discounts for renters to earn more.

“Offering a discount is key to making pricing on Turo competitive with other long-term rental options for guests,” per Turo.

Additionally, quick communication paired with flexibility are crucial to getting longer rentals and repeat customers, Fleet Bold reports. The importance of communication is vital. This, paired with a competitive long-term rate (instead of a competitive daily rate) can mean more customers renting for longer periods of time.
