The 2025 Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier race in opposite directions
It’s time to look at how well mid-size trucks have been performing during the first quarter of 2025. So far, it looks like the Toyota Tacoma should be celebrating as the Nissan Frontier scrambles to get back on track.
Truck sales show the Toyota Tacoma winning as the Nissan Frontier loses
The numbers are in, and drivers are still flocking to trucks. During the first quarter of 2025, truck sales boomed as automotive tariffs loomed. Some people have been buying new cars before they take effect.
The 2025 Toyota Tacoma is currently king as it outpaces every single rival by double digits. During the first quarter of 2024, it sold 21,558 trucks and that figure increased to 59,285 during the first quarter of 2025.
According to Pickup Truck Talk, this represents a year-over-year sales increase of 184.9%. Its closest competitor is the Chevy Colorado, which sold 25,85 models during the first quarter of 2025.
Meanwhile, the Nissan Frontier faces a notable slip. It sold 19,744 models during the first quarter of 2024 and 14,481 models during the same period in 2025. It suffered from a year-over-year sales decrease of 26.7%. The Frontier has the largest sales decline in the segment.
The 2025 Ford Ranger sold 1,918 trucks during the first quarter of 2024 and 14,913 models during the first quarter of 2025. So it has a sales increase of 677.53% while still falling behind the Toyota Tacoma.
Increased inventory levels helped the Tacoma take off. Critics suggest that the Frontier is struggling due to dated tech, the lack of value, and the lack of incentives.
