If you’ve ever tried to drive with ice still coating your windshield, you know windshield defrosters aren’t optional safety equipment. That’s why, when Toyota Motor Corporation realized some of its windshield defrosters were faulty, it recalled 62,000 EVs. Here are the SUVs affected:

  • 2023-2025 Toyota bZ4X electric crossovers
  • 2024-2025 Lexus RZ 300e electric crossovers
  • 2023-2025 Lexus RZ 450e electric crossovers

The Toyota EV defrost recall is more than a software problem

Toyota is directing dealerships to inspect multiple components to get the HVAC system up to snuff. The vague statement says the first problem may be a software issue with the electrical control unit. Dealerships should be able to fix this one with a software upgrade. The second component in question may be trickier.

The automaker is also telling dealerships to look at the electrical climate control compressor. If this part is malfunctioning, they’ll need to swap it out. No word on whether the compressor problems are a separate issue, or if they’re being worn out by the malfunctioning software.

Obviously, EVs don’t heat engine coolant the way ICE vehicles do. So instead of using engine heat to warm the HVAC system, they need an efficient electric setup. This is one of Toyota’s first forays into a mass-produced EV, so the automaker clearly has some wrinkles to iron out. I’m sure its engineers are taking notes and will be shooting for Toyota’s signature bulletproof reliability with the next generation of EV HVAC systems.

Curious if your Toyota is under recall? The automaker has hotlines set up (Toyota: 800-331-4331; Lexus: 800-255-3987). You can also plug your VIN number in at NHTSA.gov, or ask your local dealership if your vehicle has any open recalls.
