Pittsburgh tow truck operator gets busted for insurance fraud

About 36 drivers can relax knowing that justice is being served after a tow truck operator held their cars hostage. The suspect, identified as Vince Fannick, charged victims between $9,000 – $11,000 to tow their vehicles short distances.

He refused to give the vehicle back until he was paid. There are no legal limits on how much operators can charge for towing services. Many often get away with predatory practices and scams.

But in this case, the judge decided to send a message. Pennsylvania Insurance Fraud Prevention Authority warns operators to take notice.

Wreck chasers and rogue towers that provide exorbitant, brilliant services that aren’t rendered should know that it’s a crime, and police officers will come after them.

According to CBS News, Fannick pled guilty to felony insurance fraud and theft by deception charges.  He must pay $379,000 to the defrauded insurance companies within 30 days or face imprisonment.

Fannick was sentenced to six months of house arrest and five years of probation. Plus, he must record a public service announcement about predatory towing and sell his trucks. He can never legally tow again.

How to spot a towing scam:

If a tow truck operator arrives at the scene of an accident or to assist without you or authorities contacting them, it could be a scam. These are called ‘bandit’ tows.

Also, if the truck lacks official company signage or refuses to show company or driver information, that’s a red flag. Don’t let drivers rush you into signing paperwork before you read it or confirm the details.

Don’t let the driver dictate where the vehicle is being towed to. You get to pick where your vehicle is taken. Also, watch out for cash-only demands, especially for high fees not covered by your insurance.
