The last thing drivers need is to accidentally get high because their car was hit by cocaine. But the white powdery drug was bursting against police cars and the pavement during a high-speed chase in North Carolina.
A Nash County deputy with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol was in pursuit of a silver 2018 Infiniti around 8:30 AM on US-64 East out of Spring Hope. Multiple officers saw the driver tossing kilos of cocaine out of his window while trying to get away near mile marker 453.
The police officers worked together to perform a PIT maneuver. According to CBS 17, this caused the driver to run off the road and strike a tree. The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Deshunto Alston, was extracted from the vehicle and arrested.
He complained of injuries and was transported to Wake Medical for emergency care. No other injuries have been reported.
Several kilos of cocaine were collected from the Infiniti SUV. A tow truck came to seize the vehicle. Also, US-64 eastbound was closed to traffic for hours as officers recovered drug evidence from the roadway and the surrounding area.
The incident occurred just in time for rush hour traffic. It’s unclear what charges Alston will face, but his rap sheet is probably pretty long. It’s safe to predict charges for evading arrest, reckless driving, and possession of narcotics.
