TikToker “CarGirl C.J.” is a consultant who helps people deal with dealerships. So when it came time for her dad to buy a new truck, she came along. In the end, he was very happy she helped.

C.J. says, “My daddy’s not super confrontational unless it’s one of his girls’ ballgames. Then he’ll fight everybody.” In a dealership, however, he was a bit out of his element.

He knew what truck he wanted, so C.J. was able to coax him through most of the haggling over the phone. She recalls they, “got a market adjustment removed, got a good trade value, got them to pay the sales tax, which just means they cut their profit so that they’d write us a check.”

The dealership changes up the offer in person

Eventually, the time came to visit the dealership to sign the papers and pick up the truck. C.J. explains, “The one thing my daddy was really panicking about is that they had the payment calculated about $70 too high.” But because he was getting in-house financing, C.J. knew they could renegotiate the payment. “I say, ‘Dude, don’t worry, I’ll handle it.’”

“She brings us our final payments and I look at them, do some calculations like I hadn’t done them 14 times already, and say, ‘Yeah, I need you to bring me my base payment, please.’”

Of course, the salesperson told C.J. that was the best she could do. But C.J. wasn’t having it. “I said, ‘I need to see the base payment. This payment is calculated about $70 too high, which means it’s got some warranties, road hazard, maintenance contract, maybe gap insurance already built in. I need you to go and remove all that and then bring it back and show me my payment.’”

The salesperson didn’t like hearing that, but went to huddle with their in-house financing specialist. She returned with an apology and an explanation. “This girl comes back to me and tells me the reason why it’s calculated so d— high was because the sales manager had accidentally fat-fingered in the computer that the first payment wasn’t going to be for 450 days instead of the 45 days.”

C.J. didn’t buy it for one instant. She believed they’d tried to slip the higher payments through on purpose. And they were angry she’d caught them. “We went to leave, they just flipped him the keys, didn’t deliver his truck to him. He said, ‘I ain’t ever had them not shake my hand.’ To which I said, ‘Daddy, it’s the first time you ever did your job.’” You can see C.J.’s full explanation in the video embedded below:
