Brad Reynolds, a Houston, Texas homeowner, has lived in what he thought was a quiet neighborhood for many years. Reynolds was settling down to watch TV with dinner when he heard the sound of squealing tires, followed by a loud crash. He went outside, his phone’s camera recording, and saw a suspected thief climbing out of a car.

The car looked suspiciously like the 2024 Dodge Charger his Reynold’s distant neighbors reported stolen just a few hours earlier.

“It wasn’t where we parked it, and I look around, and I think, ‘Something must have happened,'” the Charger’s owner told ABC13, who didn’t want to show his face because of his job in law enforcement.

When Reynolds approached the crashed car, the driver began to verbally assault and taunt Reynolds.

“Too bad you didn’t get my face, it’s stolen. Ha ha, ha ha!” the thief sang. “It’s a stolen vehicle, ha ha!”

Except… Reynolds did capture the thief’s face

Despite the thief’s confidence, Reynold’s instinct to film paid off. At the beginning of his recording, the man’s face was captured in high definition.

“That’s quite a blooper there. I did get his face,” Reynolds said with a laugh.

The Dodge Charger was returned to the owners, who at first were angry. Insurance deemed the vehicle a total loss. However, Reynold’s video may help the couple reap the last laugh.

“At first, I was mad, but then it was kind of like a chuckle because you don’t think they did get your face, when in reality we really did. But it’s the audacity to joke like he did,” said the officer’s wife.

He threatened to return for Reynold’s

As he skipped away, he made sure to throw a few racial slurs coupled with a threat.

“Hey, I’ll be back for you. I know where you came from,” the thief said, paired with what sounded like a shot from a gun. “I’ll be back for you!”

Reynolds isn’t worried about the thief coming back for him. Authorities used the video to identify 19-year-old Adrian Xaviar Esquivel, who is currently being hunted by deputies.

Reynolds and the owner of the trashed Charger hope he sees justice.

“The only way to deter crime is to punish it,” he said. “If you let people steal cars and get away with it and get a slap on the hand, they’re going to keep doing it.”
