In the latest instance of “What in the world were they thinking!?” a California Tesla driver ran over a motorcyclist and then tried to make a break for it.

The California Highway Patrol reports that 22-year-old Ulysses Jimenez was driving his red Tesla crossover through the carpool/HOV lane when he intentionally ran over a motorcyclist. Though officers didn’t release a motive, they did say Jimenez didn’t previously know 53-year-old Jorge Uribe. But that didn’t stop him from running over Uribe’s BMW motorcycle from behind at a “high rate of speed” at 8 pm on a Monday night.

This tragedy occurred near San Diego. Jimenez hit the motorcycle so hard that he drove right over it and smashed into a 2012 Ram pickup truck that was also in the HOV lane. The truck was packed, and its 24-year-old driver and five passengers all suffered minor injuries. It appears Jimenez’s Tesla rolled on its side during the crash.

The motorcyclists was in much worse shape. While he lay dying on the pavement, Jimenez got out of his car and began hiking down the highway.

Jenny Kiti was also driving I-805 that night. One of her kids yelled, “There’s a guy just walking in the middle of the road!” Kiti slowed at the sight of Jimenez. She later recalled, “He had two scratches on the right foot. He had no shoes on. He was barefooted in the middle of the freeway which I thought was, like, so weird.”

As bizarre as his escape seemed to be, he had an apparent plan. Though he’d abandoned his shoes, he had remembered a handful of cash. He was waving it at drivers, asking for a ride. But it was a desperate gamble: “This guy’s going into moving traffic, and he doesn’t even care.”

Kiti said, “I think he was trying to get a ride. People weren’t falling for it, and then he started getting mad. Like, flipping people off.”

Why do investigators believe Jimenez intentionally hit Uribe? Because of statements he made after his arrest. This could be a road rage incident, though it’s worth noting that the Tesla, motorcycle, and pickup truck with five passengers were all legally aloud to use the HOV lane. The CHP has charged JImenez with murder and he’s being held without bail.
