[Watch] Tesla quoted a Cybertruck owner $3,000 to fix a dent, so he did it himself for $25
Anthony, a self-proclaimed “Tesla fanboy” on YouTube (@detroittesla), uploads his content from Detroit, Michigan. Recently, he saw his Cybertruck delivered, and after a few weeks earned his first dent in the driver’s side door.
Since Tesla doesn’t sell any parts and the list of shops authorized to work on Teslas is very short, he took it to his local service center. He showed the service members the dent, and they told him they’d likely have to replace the dented panel entirely. The panel itself was not cheap.
“This panel is removable, and they said to get it from the factory new was about $800,” he said. The service member explained after it got there, the maintenance wouldn’t be as simple as removing and replacing.
“She was very nice, but she said the panel from the factory is really shiny and technicians would have to ‘refinish’ it to match the other panels on my truck,” he said. “Otherwise this door would be really shiny while the rest of the truck wouldn’t.”
After the ‘refinishing’ was done and labor was factored in, he was quoted $3,000.
He decided to try and fix the Cybertruck’s dent himself
His friend, who chose not to have his face on camera, had a few ideas on how to remove it himself. In the rainy cold weather of Detroit’s December, a normal suction cup used to pop out dents wasn’t working.
So, the two moved into the garage, where his friend used a heat gun to warm the steel up and try a different fix: sticking four hot glue sticks to the center of the dent and giving it a good ol’ yank.
Though, that didn’t work. His friend grabbed the dent popper once more and in one movement, the dent was out.
“$25.26 was all it took to get the dent out,” said Anthony, holding up his receipt. “That’s insane. Not $3,000, but $25.”
