Terrorist drives car into Las Vegas power substation

Police officers are investigating a potentially terrorism-related event in Las Vegas, Nevada. The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Dawson Maloney of Albany, New York, drove across multiple states in his Nissan Sentra

Then he rammed the car into a power substation in an effort to damage critical infrastructure and cause service disruptions. However, the incident caused no impacts or operational disruptions.

Maloney was reported missing a few days early. He left notes for his family indicating that he was going to commit acts of self-harm that would “put me on the news.” He also calls himself a dead terrorist who felt an obligation to carry out this act.

According to  CBS News, after the failed attack, Maloney exited the vehicle and took his own life. Police officers discovered several guns and other weapons, including a flamethrower, in the Nissan

Investigators also found explosive gas and multiple books related to extremist ideologies in his hotel room. The books promote white supremacy and anti-government rhetoric.

Police officers share, “We discovered the subject was wearing soft body armor at the time of the incident. These findings significantly elevate the seriousness of this incident.”

There is an ongoing investigation. The attack occurred in Boulder City, about 25 miles south of Las Vegas. It’s home to the Hoover Dam, which generates 4 billion kilowatt-hours of hydroelectric power annually for Nevada, Arizona, and California.
