The Toyota RAV4, known elsewhere in the world as the Toyota Vanguard and Toyota Wildlander, is one of the best-selling crossover SUVs in the world, often taking the No. 1 spot from sales quarter to sales quarter. So, what makes the Toyota RAV4 such a popular pick from car critics, automotive enthusiasts, and average drivers alike?

The first generation of the Toyota RAV4 launched in Japan in 1994, debuting in the U.S. a couple of years later in early 1996. Then, in 1997, a Toyota RAV4 EV model was created for fleet use and limited public sale in California, with less than 1,500 units sold.

Currently in its fifth generation, which first started with the 2018 model year, the Toyota RAV4 is more successful than ever. The RAV4 is also available as the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and the Toyota RAV4 Prime, a PHEV, in the American automotive market. However, we’re still waiting on the rebirth of the Toyota RAV4 EV from back in the day.
