DMV worker took a day off, which was perfect because a student driver rammed an SUV into the building where they sit
A routine licensing test took an unexpected “turn” this week in Chaska, Minnesota. Around noon on December 19, a driver taking their road exam accidentally accelerated right into the DMV. The local police department posted a photo of the car accident on its Facebook page.
Can’t park there
According to Chaska police, the driver mistakenly hit the gas pedal instead of the brake while attempting to park. The Ford SUV, which looks like an Escape, struck two parked cars and flattened a metal parking sign before crashing into the DMV building.
Inside the center, luck was on the side of one DMV employee whose desk sits directly behind the impacted wall. They were off work that day. No one was hurt in the incident.
Across the U.S., up to 50% of first-time DMV road test takers fail
The stats range from around 40% to nearly 50%, according to various state DMV statistics. Parking errors and mishandling vehicle controls are common reasons for failure.
In this case, the driver could face additional challenges beyond rescheduling their test. If deemed negligent, they might have to cover repair costs for the vehicles and structural damage, likely through an insurance claim. The building’s insurer may also play a role in assessing and repairing the damage.
