Off-duty NY cop shot in BMW carjacking set up by strippers
This story sounds like something you’d see in a movie. Jason Mathew, an off-duty NYPD officer, was blowing off some steam at Silvecup Studios, a gentleman’s club in Queens. The officer, a true car enthusiast, owned a neon green BMW and drove it proudly.
After a night of loud music, big butts, and dollar bills, the officer left the club to head home. As he drove off, two club-goers, 29-year-old Denzel brown and 26-year-old Marvin Dankwah, followed him—though he didn’t realize it at first.
You see, both suspects had an insanely decorated criminal background. Brown is a level 3 sex offender, spent almost 10 years in prison for rape, and has several charges of robbery and aggravated assault. Police have arrested Dankwah more than 12 times on charges ranging from robbery to criminal mischief.
Brown and Dankwah followed the officer for a few blocks before the officer parked the BMW. Security camera footage caught the suspects jumping out of the Nissan they were driving, and holding a gun to Mathew, telling him to get out of the car. Mathew tried to speed away when one of the two opened fire, shooting through the BMW’s windshield and hitting him in the leg.
Investigators believe strippers tipped off the suspects
The NYPD is following a lead that strippers relayed customer information to the two, giving them tips as to who is wearing expensive clothes and jewelry, or who is carrying keys to expensive cars. Police suspect the strippers told the two to target Mathew.
The suspects fled, but the police caught them days later speeding in the damaged Nissan. Police brought in both men for questioning, and prosecutors are now trying them for attempted murder; officials are holding them without bail.
“As alleged, an off-duty New York City Police officer was nearly murdered by these two defendants when they attempted to carjack him and fired into his vehicle,” wrote District Attorney Melinda Katz, quoted by LicPost.
The officer is expected to fully recover
Paramedics rushed Mathew to the nearest hospital, where medical staff treated his gunshot wound. Doctors expect him to make a full recovery.
He’s been on the force since 2022 and has a clean record.
“I thank the NYPD for quickly apprehending these defendants, and we wish the young officer the very best as he recovers from his injuries,” Katz wrote.
