Stellantis Pumps $400 Million Into Ohio to Build Mid-Size Trucks

Plot twist! Everyone thought that Ram was going to build a new mid-size truck in Illinois at the Belvedere Assembly Plant. This is where the last Jeep Cherokee generation was built.
However, the new truck from Stellantis will be produced in Ohio instead. Stellantis is investing $400 million to build this new truck at the Toledo Assembly Plant, where it will take place alongside the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator.
The new truck could share a few different components with the Jeep Gladiator as well. Drivers may have been expecting a more comfortable type of lifestyle truck, like the Ram Rampage, to emerge.
For example, the Rampage is a unibody model. But if the upcoming model shares Jeep components, then it could have a body-on-frame build that’s more refined than the Gladiator, like the Toyota Tacoma.
According to Auto Blog, the new truck could be called the Ram Dakota, but that name hasn’t been officially confirmed. It’s almost being used in South America for other mid-size truck. But at least we know to expect something more capable now, and we might get it faster than expected.
Building this truck with Jeep parts at a plant that’s already up and running could speed up its release, which is currently scheduled by 2028. Plus, the Ram mid-size truck should start around $30,000 to be competitive in the market.
This move could help Ram pump out mid-size trucks faster than Hyundai, too. Hyundai is pressuring rivals by building a new body-on-frame truck for America by 2030.
