A dash cam is a useful tool for both drivers and law enforcement. However, it can also be a jaw-dropping reference for the craziest of driving experiences. Fortunately for one young motorist, a police dash cam video captured their successful rescue from an out-of-control runaway car.

Dash cam video captured a daring rescue as MN state troopers stopped a runaway car going over 100 mph

A runaway car is no laughing matter. Failed brakes or faulty throttle architecture can send a seemingly safe car to deadly speeds. And it’s not just finicky classics or projects, either. One runaway ride put a teenager in harm’s way in none other than a Honda Pilot.

According to CBS News, Minnesota state troopers received a dispatch notification that a runaway car was out of control on public roads. The Pilot reportedly had a fault that caused the SUV to accelerate without prompt.

Law enforcement officers (LEOs) say the 18-year-old in the Honda tried to stop the SUV with its brakes and emergency brake, to no avail. The young driver also tried to shift the Pilot into neutral. Unfortunately, the actions didn’t slow the runaway car.

Dash cam video caught the police’s efforts to slow down and eventually stop the wayward SUV. Minnesota State Trooper Zach Gruver recounted the intense situation. “Your training kicks in, and you kind of go to ‘OK, what can we do to get this vehicle stopped?’” Gruver pointed out the wild, dangerous speeds the sensible SUV hit during the emergency. “I hit my radar and he was doing 113 [mph].”

To catch the runaway car, Gruver said he had to reach speeds of between 120 and 130 mph. However, Gruver told CBS that he knew of a dead end in the coming miles. It was the time to act. Gruver overtook the young driver and braked ahead of the runaway vehicle. The Honda Pilot’s safety technology suite reportedly slowed the SUV to avoid a collision. Still, the plan worked, and Gruver was able to stop the speeding Pilot before it caused any injuries.
