Super Speeders in NYC Racked up $10M in Fines Last Year, Including One Who Owes $94K in Unpaid Tickets
A new report reveals that super speeders in New York City have accumulated more than $10 million in speed camera fines over the past 12 months. Included in that number is one who owes $94,000 all by himself.
The report, published by Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets, defines a super speeder as someone who receives at least 16 speed camera tickets in a single year. (A slightly different definition than that used in places like, say, Florida.)
Luxury car drivers make up a disproportionate number of super speeders in New York City
According to data from the New York City Department of Finance, super speeders in New York City are 72% more likely to drive a new vehicle and 57% more likely to drive a luxury vehicle than the average driver. While only 23% of all drivers on the road in New York City drive luxury vehicles, they still account for 40% of the super speeders.
52% of the top 100 super speeders drive luxury vehicles. Also, among the top 1,000 worst super speeders, the most common car brands are BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
Researchers also learned that the average super speeder has paid $4,890 in fines, fees, and penalties. Four in five super speeders have paid off more than they still owe.
New York City’s most flagrant super speeders and what they drive
The most paid off by any single super speeder in New York City is $70,536, by the driver of a 2022 BMW X5. However, the most owed by a single person is the driver of a 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, who has racked up $93,714 in fines.
Also making the list of top super speeders is a 2022 Kia Forte with 246 violations in 2024 and 73 additional tickets through 2025, totaling $33,814 in unpaid fines and a 2022 Chrysler Pacifica that was issued 232 tickets in 2024 totaling $25,691.
“Super speeders are spending millions to speed through your neighborhood in brand-new luxury cars,” said Ben Furnas, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives.
Super speeders in New York City don’t only drive luxury cars
Among non-luxury vehicle models, Honda has the most super speeders in New York City. Nissan owners and Jeep owners are second and third on the list.
“Super speeders are racking up millions of dollars in tickets and putting all of us at risk,” said Joe Jankoski, a member of Families for Safe Streets who lost his partner to a super speeder last year. “These super speeders are spending way more to pay the fines from their excessive tickets than they’d spend on a speed limiter, and they’re still not slowing down. We can’t sit by while a few thousand New Yorkers terrorize the rest of our city, and Albany must pass Stop Super Speeders in the state budget.”
