For some, car buying is exciting. But for others, it’s complicated, nerve-racking, and cripplingly expensive. It’s not just the initial purchase or the prospect of a monthly payment, either. Depreciation robs owners of the initial value for years after they drive off the lot. Still, not every segment depreciates at the same rate. And one segment continues to boast the vehicles with the best resale value on the market, even after five years of ownership.

Pickup trucks maintain their lead as the vehicles with the best resale for 2025, but there are standouts

Hybrids are enjoying a bit of a popularity boom. American buyers want money-saving fuel economy and ease without the range anxiety of EV ownership. In fact, hybrids came within striking distance of the vehicles with the best resale value on the market. But these fuel-sipping electrified vehicles couldn’t quite dethrone America’s love for trucks

In an analysis of over 800,000 vehicles, iSeeCars concluded that pickup trucks held the top spot among vehicles with the highest average resale value since the pre-pandemic market. On average, used trucks returned a 40.4% five-year depreciation rate in 2025. That puts the utilitarian segment just 0.3% below the rate for hybrids.

Of the trucks with the best resale value on the market, the Toyota Tacoma took the top spot at 26.0% in five years. The Tacoma’s larger sibling, the Tundra, edged out the smaller Ford Ranger at 29.1% and 34.7%, respectively. But the majority of pickup trucks came in well under the overall industry average of 45.6%

“Midsize trucks tend to outrank their full-size counterparts, suggesting more buyers prefer the balance of capability, cost, and size offered by midsize models,” said iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer. However, over two years, the gap between the truck and hybrid segments shrank considerably, from 2.6% to 0.3%.
