Parents turn to ridesharing for school runs as bus driver positions are cut
Parents in Chicago, Illinois are just trying to get their kids to school. However, the increasing difficulty of finding qualified drivers has put parents in a unique position. Without school bus drivers, parents are having to come up with other reliable ways to get their kids to school.
Some, the Associated Press reported, were able to change jobs or switch schedules to get to school on time. Many weren’t as fortunate. A few parents with kids who attend schools in different neighborhoods were forced to pull their children from school altogether.
Parents, though, are becoming more creative with their solutions. Piggyback Network is an app developed by parents to coordinate and share rides. Rides aren’t free, they cost roughly $0.80 per mile, and regular drivers can use credits to pay for a ride with a different parent when needed.
Drivers are usually parents from the same neighborhood, coming with the assurance the ride isn’t from a total stranger. This increases the confidence of the passengers, too.
“It’s an opportunity for kids not to be late to school,” Takia Phillips, a 15-year-old passenger, told the outlet.
As of right now, the app is only being used in Chicago, but developers plan to expand to Virginia, North Carolina, and Texas.
There are other ridesharing options, too
PiggyBack Network isn’t the only app helping parents coordinate rides. Other apps, like HopSkipDrive or Kango, have contracts with school districts to help parents get kids to school. Unlike HopSkipDrive, Kango drivers are paid while it used to be free.
Kango and HopSkipDrive also offer services to parents with children with special needs, like walking a child to class. This helps those passengers avoid being teased about being transported on specific buses.
Regardless of why parents have to turn to ride-sharing, it’s a valuable way to ensure children get the education they deserve.
“Those bus driver shortages are not really going away,” said Joanna McFarland, the CEO of HopSkipDrive.
