Retired Secret Service Agent Shares What to Do as Soon as You Get in Your Car
Scott Bryson spent 25 years in the Secret Service, protecting five presidents from Clinton to Biden. He worked on high-risk details and faced intense situations, from armed encounters overseas to hospital rushes in the U.S. Today, he shares his knowledge on TikTok, YouTube, and his podcast “Beyond the Service.”
Occasionally, I come across his autos-related tips and tricks. In this one, he just got out of the grocery store and hopped back into his car.
His routine, while likely mindless to him and other federal agents, is something worth sharing.
Get in your car and lock the doors
Seems a bit “duh” to some of us, I’m sure. But he’s serious.
Lots of folks probably climb into their car and sit there messing around with their crap. Maybe you pull out your phone to text your partner, friend, or mom before you drive off. I know I do!
Whatever it is you’re needing to do before taking off, Bryson says, just lock your car doors first.
“Don’t be paranoid,” he warns. It’s one thing to be aware, another to be unnecessarily afraid of your surroundings. “I’m not saying walk around like a ninja all the time.”
It’s all about being situationally aware in your car. Don’t live in fear, he asserts. Just pay attention.
The tip is related to another one he offered to folks filling up at the gas station
In this TikTok, Bryson explains that it’s important to stand against the side of your car when you’re refueling.
The reason is simple: the stance gives you high visibility plus protection (your car). Again. It’s all about staying aware.
Since gas stations can be dangerous places, especially for women, ever since I saw this tip, I put away my phone while refueling and pay attention to my surroundings. I know I’m unlikely to be in true danger, but you never know.
Bryson’s car safety tips are simple and repeat the same message over and over. It’s really all about awareness. Not paranoia; there’s certainly a difference. Stay alert, but don’t work yourself up.
