‘Buried in Muck’ Remains Found in Submerged Car Linked to Woman Who Vanished 22 Years Ago
Y’all know I can’t go long without talking about true crime. It’s because of the murder podcasts I listen to while reviewing cars. This time, police officers found a car submerged in a Florida waterway. They found remains inside that could explain what happened when a woman disappeared 22 years ago.
Remains in car could be linked to missing Florida woman
A voluntary dive team with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office found a vehicle in the Intracoastal Waterway near the area of 18th Road in Palm Coast.
Police officers share that the car “was submerged approximately 14 to 18 feet under water, upside down, and partially buried in muck”. Investigators noted that the make, model, and color of the vehicle were linked to a missing person’s case.
In 2002, 41-year-old Mary Lou Combs was last seen in a 1996 Plymouth Neon Coupe. She was reported missing after failing to arrive at her daughter’s birthday party and never collecting her paycheck at work.
The team immediately contacted the FBI for assistance. Divers who accessed the vehicle through the driver’s side window can collect evidence. They found human remains and a size 7 shoe, which is consistent with Comb’s shoe size.
According to the Flagler Sheriff, they also discovered Combs’ driver’s license, and one of the recovered bones had a metal plate consistent with an ankle reconstruction surgery Combs had.
The remains will be sent to a lab to cross-reference the DNA with Combs’ DNA on file to see if there is a match. Currently, a medical examiner is working to determine the cause of death.
Rumors suggest that she overdosed at a party and someone disposed of her body. But she may have been in a tragic car accident and drowned. Either way, her children are finally getting answers 22 years later.
