There’s a heavy-duty recall that Chevrolet owners need to be aware of. Certain Chevy Silverado HD models have a brake fluid leak that could cause the trucks to catch on fire. General Motors tells owners to park outside.

Chevy Silverado HD truck recall due to fire risks

General Motors is recalling 62,468 Chevy Silverado HD trucks because they could catch on fire. There is a brake fluid leak that could spark flames.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall includes 2019 – 2024 Silverado 4500HD, 5500 HD, and 6500HD models. These vehicles are usually sold for commercial purposes.

The problem is related to the brake pressure sensor assembly. It might allow brake fluid to leak beyond the diaphragm seal into the brake pressure switch.

Reportedly, Chevy claims that a supplier for the diaphragm seal used an unauthorized chemical in the rubber during the manufacturing process. It degrades over time as a reaction to the brake fluid.

Also, brake fluid can seep into the sensor assembly’s electrical components. This can short the brake pressure switch and associated fuse. The short in the circuit may generate excessive heat.

This may occur when the engine is on or off, so General Motors recommends parking outside and away from other vehicles until the problem is corrected. There have been 160 related fires.

If your truck is at risk you might see “service brake system” illuminated on the dash. Dealers will replace the brake pressure switch wire harness with a part that includes silicone sealant that prevents leaking at no cost to owners.

General Motors will begin notifying owners at risk via mail in July.
