Imagine your Range Rover gets stolen and skidding along behind it you’re still convinced one of your buddies is just pranking you. With friends like that, who needs enemies?

According to police, a 49-year-old Reading, MA resident chose the worst possible gas pump. At about 6:30 PM, he pulled into the Shell on Main Street. Then he walked around his 2022 Range Rover Sport to fuel it up. But he made one critical mistake: he left it unlocked with the keys in the ignition.

Dustin Zimmerman (32) pulled up to a nearby pump in a stolen blue Chevrolet Malibu he’d driven from his home state of Maine. But when he saw the unlocked Range Rover, he decided his crime spree could use some upgraded wheels. He abandoned his Chevrolet, hopped into the Range Rover’s driver’s seat, banged a U-turn, and raced for the gas station exit.

Not ready to let his Range Rover go

The Range Rover’s owner wasn’t letting his SUV get away so easily. So he grabbed onto the passenger side mirror. He got dragged along on the U-turn and through the parking lot for 20–25 feet.

Was this victim just that desperate to keep his Range Rover? His friend says “no.” Michael Leonard, the victim’s friend, also happened to be at the gas station that day. He was the first on the scene to try and help his friend. Leonard said:

“I think he tried to not stop him. I think he thought someone was screwing around or something with him, so he grabbed the mirror and then got dragged 20–25 feet.”

After a skid like that, the victim was barely rattled. “He was actually pretty composed. He was more concerned about grabbing his cellphone, which was 10 feet from him so he could look at it and track the guy. You could see him going by Woburn on the Google Maps.”

The tracking paid off, and police caught up with Zimmerman in New Jersey five hours later. The victim went to the hospital, but authorities expect him to be fine.
