It’s important to think about when trucks get too big. The Ram 1500 is already referred to as a bus, boat, and tank, but Stellantis might not care. Ram is obsessed with building a three-row truck despite requiring more space.

Ram wants to build three-row trucks

Typically if a family wants the ability to haul tons of gear and extra passengers, they get an SUV. SUVs still have impressive towing capacities. For example, the Jeep Wagoneer can tow up to 10,000 lbs.

This falls short of the Ford F-150’s ability to tow 13,500 lbs, but it’s still impressive. But what if you didn’t have to sacrifice your truck bed for extra seating?

That’s why Ram is getting serious about building three-row trucks. In fact, Ram has already submitted a patent for a three-row design to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The jump seats will be clipped to the back wall of the cabin. They also look quite small, which is alright for children. I was stuffed into a rear sideways seat of the Ford Ranger, and I survived.

But what makes these seats even cooler is the fact that they can be removed and placed on the tailgate or flat surface.

You could clip some pads on for extra comfort. Would this be more convenient than using fold-up camping chairs?

The seats can also be removed if you need extra space of as a midgate passthrough for longer loads. They might be able to fold flat, too.

I saw the Ram 1500 EV Revolution concept in 2023 and thought the third-row seats were interesting, but leg room looked tight. Unfortunately, no one was allowed to climb in the truck to test them out.

However, this feature didn’t make it to the upcoming Ram 1500 REV. Not every expensive idea can make it to the first model year.

At the time, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares shared that everything seen on the CES concept car will arrive during different stages of the lifecycle management for the next generation, depending on the feature.

Stay tuned for updates, sometimes patients never actually see the light of day. But Ram has been working to make a three-row truck happen for quite some time.
