Law enforcement arrested nearly 800,000 drivers in 2023 for driving under the influence (DUI). It’s a sobering statistic, for sure. However, even drivers with a fresh DUI require insurance to get back on the road and to a sense of normalcy following their arrest. And one car insurance provider earned top marks for drivers with a drunk driving arrest.

Progressive took the top spot among car insurance providers when it comes to insurance following a DUI

Drunk driving is more than inconvenient for offenders; it’s a safety concern and a common cause of death and injury on American roads. We can’t implore you enough to have a plan and never, ever drink and drive. 

However, even driving while intoxicated (DWI) offenders need to work, go to classes, and keep appointments. Consequently, a judge may allow a driver to get a temporary or occupational license after their license suspension. Of course, getting back on the road after a DUI means using car insurance.

Still, as you might imagine, getting a DUI conviction will typically raise a driver’s insurance rates substantially. In fact, the nationwide insurance rate increase following a drunk driving charge is around 65%, per The Zebra. However, not every insurance provider drives up the cost for DWI offenders to the same degree.

According to Forbes Advisor, Progressive is the most forgiving provider when it comes to a drunk driving charge. Progressive “offers the cheapest rates for drivers with a DUI among the companies we evaluated,” Forbes said of the provider.

However, Progressive’s average annual cost for “good drivers” sits at around $1,826. That’s pricier than Geico and USAA by around $229 and $462, respectively. Moreover, Progressive failed to match the overall user satisfaction and rating of Nationwide.

Of course, the best way to keep your insurance rates in a good range is to avoid risky, destructive behaviors. Yes, that includes indulging in alcoholic beverages and getting behind the wheel. Again, don’t drink and drive.
