Police officer Richard Rodriuez has officially been stripped of his police powers. He no longer has his gun or badge following a misconduct investigation.
According to WTTW News, Rodriguez isn’t alone. He’s the fifth member of the Near North (18th) Police District Tactical team to be stripped of powers. This investigation is still ongoing.
Allegedly, Rodriguez repeatedly violated the rights of black men during traffic stops. He was improperly stopping them and searching their cars. The investigation revealed a concerning pattern of undocumented and unprofessional traffic stops of black Chicago residents.
Rodriquez was identified as having the most complaints of any other officer aside from Josep Vecchio with the tram. Vecchio has also been stripped of his powers.
Plus, he’s facing 28 complaints and is named in eight pending lawsuits. Six complaints have led to sustained suspensions totaling over 18 days.
Complaints allege that he forcefully smashed a man’s face repeatedly into his car. He was involved in an improper search of a pedestrian, and pulled the same driver over twice without justification.
The officers have been engaging in unprofessional and disrespectful conduct that violates department policy. That includes the use of profanities, insults, and threats of force.”
Former 19th district Commander Micheal Barz shares, “While COPA recognizes that some of these traffic stops may have been justified, in their totality, the racial disparity in the stops may be indicative of implicit bias and/or racial profiling.”
