Police believe the occupants of a Volkswagen Golf R fleeing police at 145 mph were using their phones to film the pursuit. The vehicle wasn’t stopped until police ended the “lengthy pursuit” with stinger spikes.

Once stopped, police discovered that the driver of the Volkswagen Golf R only had a provisional licence. On top of that, the vehicle was seized for being uninsured.

The chase took place across East Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom on Friday night. The Beds, Cambs & Herts (BCH) Road Policing Unit and Hertfordshire Police reported that the Volkswagen Golf R failed to stop when officers requested the driver to pull over. Instead, the Golf sped away.

“It is believed that occupants of the vehicle were also filming the pursuit on their mobile phones,” the BCH Road Policing Unit wrote on X. “Each has denied this, so all phones have been seized so that this evidence can be obtained. #playsillygames.”

Several people on social media called for the driver be banned from ever getting a license

The BCH Road Policing Unit reported that the driver of the Volkswagen Golf R was cited for several traffic offenses following the chase. That, however, wasn’t going to be strong enough punishment or deterrent for several people on social media.

Shouldn’t ever be allowed to drive again,” one person commented.

The car needs crushing as long as it’s not stolen,” read another comment. “In front of them, so they can see there [sic] money being destroyed. A ban from driving for life! A driving license is not a right!

“£2,000 Fine and he doesn’t get his car back till it’s paid in full,” someone else suggested. “If after a month it’s not paid, the car is sold at auction and all fines/fees [are] deducted. The courts are way too soft on these idiots.”
