Family sues police department after speeding cruiser kills motorcyclist and officer is cleared of wrongdoing
Jacob Vela and his family plan to sue the Goodyear, Arizona police department after a speeding police cruiser killed his father. His father was riding through a busy intersection on a motorcycle when a police officer sped through a red light, allegedly without lights or sirens activated.
The cruiser struck Vela’s father, killing him instantly in the center of the intersection last October. The police department launched an internal investigation and said officers were responding to an assault in progress.
“[My father] wasn’t speeding, he wasn’t cutting through traffic, he was just cruising on his motorcycle,” Jacob told 12 News.
The department determined the officer’s lights and sirens were active before the collision and was cleared of any wrongdoing. However, a good samaritan’s dash camera footage shows a very different story.
“They just need to come forward,” he added.
As viewers noted, dash cams don’t lie
A concerned resident anonymously submitted dash camera footage of the collision to reporters after the story aired in October.
The footage is blurry, but Vela’s attorney noted it wasn’t clear that the officer’s lights and sirens were active when he entered the intersection.
“That dash cam footage shows it’s a very busy intersection, there are a lot of vehicles, and those vehicles were traveling at speed,” their attorney said. “It just shows me that there’s a lot more happening than what they’re telling us.”
If the Goodyear police don’t respond to Vela’s claim and intent to sue, a lawsuit could be in the future.
Absolutely no one defended the officer
“What some bull crap! The lights were not on and even if they were, you can’t just fly into an intersection like that,” wrote a viewer. “They clearly did something wrong, they killed a man who had a green light!”
Another thought it was suspicious that it was an internal investigation that found the officer not guilty.
“The police investigated themselves and found no wrongdoing,” they wrote. “Where have I see this before?”
Others said the dash cam footage revealed everything lawyers needed to see.
“There’s video that shows the cop was in the wrong, and the PG office LIED about the lights and sirens,” another wrote. “Disgusting, but why am I not surprised?”
