‘Pretty Much Surreal’: Police in Canada Searching for Thieves Caught on Video Pulling off $2M Luxury Car Heist
Police in Canada are on the lookout for thieves who stole $2 million worth of luxury vehicles in Ontario. The thieves drove away with the cars after breaking into a high-end car dealership in Oakville.
Halton Regional Police are investigating the brazen theft of a Ferrari 812 GTS, a Porsche 911 GT3, a Porsche 911 Carrera, three Mercedes-Benzes, and two BMWs, valued at about $2 million CAD ($1.4 million USD). The thieves, who police believe numbered as many as 10, stole the luxury cars in less than 10 minutes from Lockwood Leasing in Ontario.
According to the Toronto Star, the dealership’s manager, Mark Kusiewicz, described the scene as “pretty much surreal.” When he walked into the building, he said he saw pieces of car parts scattered around the showroom. He also found evidence of a heist: blood from one thief and a false fingernail from another.
Oakville News reports the theft of the luxury vehicles took place close to 3:30 a.m on Sunday morning, Jan. 10. The thieves gained entry by smashing a window. No one was in the building at the time. Upon entry, the thieves went directly to a lockbox containing the vehicle keys and used crowbars to pry it open. The thieves took all of the cars from the dealership’s showroom floor.
The dealership’s security cameras recorded the thieves stealing the cars
Security cameras showed eight thieves receiving the keys to the eight vehicles. They then drove the cars out through the back door of the property. Two other suspects were in vehicles that drove the robbers to the dealership.
“They distributed the keys to the vehicles in the showroom, and each person got into a vehicle and started it up. They opened up the back doors and out they went,” said Kusiewicz. “This all happened in about eight to 10 minutes.”
Five of the eight stolen vehicles have already been recovered, according to Inside Halton, including a BMW, a Mercedes, a Ferrari, and two Porsches. Two of the cars were equipped with tracking devices
“We’re really happy. Happy with their condition from what I can see on the outside,” said Kusiewicz. Two arrests have reportedly been made in connection with the case, but police would not confirm that.
Kusiewicz added, “Who gets up at 3 a.m. and says, ‘Let’s go steal eight cars?’ To be brazen enough to even think of being involved in a multimillion-dollar crime at their age … they seem young. There’s something broken there.”
