New York police bust another 11-year-old with a stolen SUV
Some people may complain about kids using tablets and phones too often. However, how would you feel if those kids were out stealing cars instead? New York police officers busted two 11-year-olds driving a stolen SUV in the past two weeks.
11-year-old caught by NY police with another stolen SUV
A Rochester Police Department captain was driving in an unmarked SUV on Lyell Avenue, when he was side swiped by a Kia SUV.
He made radio calls for backup as he followed the stolen SUV until it broke down due to its damage. According to WHEC, the captain sustained minor injuries and returned to work a few days later.
Officers found the car on Jefferson Avenue about 20 blocks away. The driver was an 11-year-old boy. Because he is too young for juvenile detention, he was returned to his parents.
However, the plot thickens as this was the second incident involving an 11-year-old boy driving a stolen SUV in the past two weeks.
During the prior incident, a child drove the stolen vehicle through a crosswalk and ran a pedestrian over. It’s unclear if they were injured.
Police officers shared that it’s frustrating because you can’t charge an 11-year-old or put the incident in the juvenile justice system. Also, why are 11-year-old kids involved? Where are their parents or support systems?
On a positive note, the number of car thefts in Rochester, New York is declining. Reports of stolen cars are down to 28 a week. Two years ago, 75 vehicles were being stolen per week.
