Dauphin County, PA commissioner wrecks government SUV for the fourth time

Dauphine County Commissioner George Hartwich has some explaining to do. He just wrecked a government SUV for the fourth time. Police officers are currently investigating the incident involving a county-owner 2023 Ford Explorer

Hartwich arrived at a meeting 10 minutes late and allegedly had slurred speech. He was late because he crashed an SUV in the parking garages of the country administration building. The commissioner ran into a concrete pillar.

He is subject to the standard procedure involving a county vehicle being taken for a drug and alcohol screening. He also is required to make a referral to the Dauphin County Criminal Investigation Division.

The county has attempted to initiate both steps and investigators preserved the evidence that they could. According to ABC 27, this is the fourth crash that Hartwick has been involved in with a county-owned vehicle since 2014.

Hartwich claimed that he was late due to attending a flag planting at the state capitol in honor of child abuse victims. He was scheduled to make a proclamation, but the proclamation never happened.

It’s unclear how badly damaged the government SUV is. A few exterior pieces fell off of the Ford Explorer during the incident. Stay tuned for updates as the investigation continues. I couldn’t find any information related to the three previous SUV accidents.
