Ozzy Osbourne, who pioneered heavy metal music as the frontman of Black Sabbath, died in 2025. The surprisingly humorous and charismatic musician was always the first to laugh at his life of rockstar antics. When Howard Stern called Ozzy out for failing his California driver’s license test 18 times, the musician revealed his failures had been for the most “Ozzy” of reasons.

“That’s stoned.”

His over a dozen driver’s license test could have been a reality show in and of themselves. He admitted that he once passed out at a red light–during his driver’s license test.

“I woke up. The door was open. The car was parked. And there was a note. ‘Mr. Osbourne, you failed. I suggest you don’t try and drive this vehicle any further.’” I guess there’s no special treatment for celebrities in LA. Time to call his dutiful assistant, Tony, and catch a ride home.

With 25 platinum albums, Ozzie Osbourne has proven himself anything but a quitter. So he showed up at the California DMV to take the test agin. But not sober. And soon, word of his antics spread.

“There was two occasions: The guy didn’t get in the f—ing car with me.” The poor test administrator tried to talk some sense into the rockstar. “He said, ‘Mr. Osbourne.'” But that ship had sailed. “I’m like f—ing falling through the hedgerows.”

For Ozzy Osbourne, 19th time’s a charm

Though Ozzy Osbourne toured in the U.S. for decades, he and his family moved to California in the early 2000s. The Prince of Darkness was finally crowned Prince of the DMV and given his California Driver’s License on his 19th license test attempt, in 2009. He was 60 years old.

Ozzy attributed acing his exam to one thing. “That’s what sobriety brought me.”

When he chatted with Howard Stearn he promised that while he drove, his trips were  “Not very far.” Meanwhile, poor Tony had to ride along while Ozzy ironed out the kinks in his technique. “I mean I got my assistant Tony. He goes, ‘Ozzy, Ozzy, you’re going to be close to the wall.’”

In Ozzy’s defense, he learned to drive in the United Kingdom. When asked if he always remembers whether to drive on the left or right side of the road he said simply, “No.”

Ozzy Osbourne’s car collection, and Ferrari crash

Though Ozzy didn’t get his driver’s license until 2009, he’d already amassed a massive supercar collection. Why? He said, “I was driving illegally for years.”

Ozzy even said he’d taken a Jaguar XJ12 up to 130 mph before slowing down because he kept picturing how quickly a tire blowout would end his life. Reports say his garage held an Aston Martin Vantage, a Rolls-Royce Phantom, an Audi R8, and a Ferrari 458 Italia wrapped in chrome.

Shortly after he got his driver’s license, Ozzy caused a low-speed crash in his chrome Ferrari.

This crash made headlines, but it did more than that. Even though Ozzy proudly had a California license in his hand, his longtime wife felt he was too drunk to be driving. It looks like sobriety hadn’t stuck the first time. Sharon Osbourne sold off the cars and Ozzy ended up in a 12-step program.
