‘Hours of Cleanup’ Overturned Semi-Truck Litters Wisconsin Highway With 264 Beer Kegs
An overturned semi-truck crashed south of Waupun, Wisconsin, resulting in the highway being littered with kegs of New Glarus beer. The accident and cleanup, which took more than six hours, blocked the northbound lanes of Highway 151 near Highway 26.
The accident occurred at approximately 6:15 a.m. on Wednesday. The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office reported that their preliminary investigation indicates that a 61-year-old male from Marshall, Wisconsin, was operating the overturned 2015 Peterbilt tractor-trailer. The Sheriff’s Office said the semi-truck left the roadway to the left, struck a guardrail, and then overturned.
According to WISN News, a New Glarus spokesman said the semi-truck was carrying 264 half-barrel kegs of beer bound for distributors. KFIZ News reported that the kegs weighed approximately 40,000 pounds.
The Chief of the Waupun Fire Department said paramedics took one person to the hospital with apparent minor injuries. The crash damaged three vehicles in total.
The cleanup of the accident involved transferring all the beer kegs to another semi-truck before crews could remove the overturned semi from the roadway. The second semi returned the beer kegs to New Glarus.
In addition to the Waupun Fire Department and the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office, the Waupun Police Department, the Dodge County Emergency Response Team, the Dodge County Highway Department, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, and the Wisconsin State Patrol assisted at the scene.
