Safety is a top priority for many car buyers, from the tenured consumer to the first-time driver. After all, a top safety rating from a trusted entity like the IIHS or NHTSA can be the deciding factor in a car-buying decision. However, if you’re in the market for an electric car in the midsize sedan market, the Hyundai IONIQ 6 stands alone.

The Hyundai IONIQ 6 stands alone as the only midsize electric car model with top marks from the IIHS

I often drive with a close cohort of mine when I visit Austin, Texas. It’s an old stomping ground of mine, and my good pal likes to pick me up in his Audi S5. It’s a sports sedan that turns petrol into power and sound. However, my fellow car enthusiast is also fiercely opinionated when it comes to cars. You might expect what a die-hard Audi fan would conclude about a uniquely styled Hyundai IONIQ 6.

All joking aside, the IONIQ 6 is one of the first legacy automaker challengers to present a real midsize electric car segment threat to the Tesla Model 3. Better yet, the IONIQ 6 earned a “Top Safety Pick+” (TSP+) rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Model 3, on the other hand, doesn’t have a 2024 TSP+. It does, however, boast a 2022 TSP+ award.

Consequently, the 2024 Hyundai IONIQ 6 is the only electric vehicle in the midsize car segment with an IIHS Top Safety Pick or TSP+ rating. To accomplish such a task, the IONIQ 6 earned a “good” or “acceptable” rating in every crashworthiness, avoidance, mitigation, and child restraint category.

However, despite the underwhelming nature of an “acceptable” rating, the award establishes the IONIQ 6 as the only electric car in the midsize segment with a TSP+ award. Moreover, the IONIQ 6 is one of only three midsize sedan models in the segment with a TSP+ award. Alongside the Hyundai EV, the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry also earned the coveted safety rating.
