American Sprinter Sha’carri Richardson Arrested in Florida for ‘Super-Speeding’ Over 100 MPH
It wasn’t so long ago that American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson captured the title of fastest woman in the world. On Thursday, she earned another title related to how fast she can go: super-speeder.
That’s because, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Deputies, the 25-year-old was driving 104 miles per hour on State Road 429 near Stoneybrook Parkway just outside of Orlando, Florida.
Sha’carri Richardson taken to jail under Florida’s ‘super-speeder’ law
Florida’s recently enacted “super-speeder” law, which took effect in July, means that anyone caught going over 100 miles per hour or driving 50 miles per hour above the posted speed limit can be taken to jail.
Therefore, Sha’Carri Richardson was booked into the Orange County jail on a charge of dangerous excessive speeding at 100 mph or more. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department also reported she was “dangerously tailgating and traveling across lanes of travel to pass other motorists.”
Richardson reportedly posted a $500 bond, and jail officials released her. It is the second time in the past five months that she has spent time in jail. In August, authorities arrested Richardson for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend, American sprinter Christian Coleman, at the Seattle-Tacoma Airport. Coleman eventually declined to pursue the case.
In 2021, officials banned Richardson from competing at the Tokyo Olympics after she tested positive for THC, a chemical found in cannabis. She eventually made her Olympic debut in Paris in 2024, winning a gold medal in the women’s 4×100-meter relay and a silver in the 100 meters.
Florida law enforcement has been very busy enforcing the state’s ‘super-speeder’ law
Earlier this month, a driver caught going 120 mph claimed that he thought the police were racing him. He said this in the officer’s dashcam video.
“Racing you? What? You passed me,” the officer responded incredulously. He then went over to the driver’s side of the car and told the driver to “step outside the car.”
A few days earlier, police arrested a 19-year-old male from Plant City, Florida, for weaving in and out of traffic, passing vehicles on both sides, and changing lanes without using his turn signal.
When a trooper activated his lights and sirens and gave chase, the Ford Mustang driver hit the gas, reportedly reaching speeds up to 154 mph. The trooper just so happened to be driving a Ford Mustang GT of his own.
