We’ve all been there. We’re driving on the highway, maybe talking on the phone or to other passengers. Suddenly, we realize we’re about to miss our exit. One driver in Columbus, Ohio, just did the same thing. Instead of safely navigating their mistake, though, they caused a terrible domino effect.

A traffic camera on 71 South at the 670 split in Columbus, Ohio, recorded the incident. A red minivan seemingly meant to take the 670 exit ramp, but slowed to a complete top in the middle lane on 71. Very dangerous move…

The driver threw on their right turn signal. Near immediately, a second minivan slowed to a stop behind the red minivan. Then, a third vehicle, a white minivan, pulled up to the line.

Within seconds, a grey conversion van plows into the line of cars. The collision sends all three trailing vehicles spinning and twisting. The red minivan’s driver pulls over to the split’s shoulder…then continues on down the exit ramp. They left a three-car pileup in their wake.

In Ohio, leaving an accident you caused is a hit-and-run. If there’s only property damage, you face a misdemeanor. You could get up to 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. If someone gets hurt or dies, you face felony charges. That can bring years in prison and heavy fines. The state will suspend your license for six months to three years. The other drivers can also sue you for damages. Your insurance company may cancel your policy or raise your rates, too.

The actions of the driver in the red minivan were so chilling that Matt Bruning of the Ohio Department of Transportation posted the traffic camera footage on his X account. “If you miss your exit, do NOT do this. Ever.” Instead, carry on to the next exit and have your GPS reroute you to your destination.
