‘Could Have Saved Him’ Off-Duty Massachusetts Police Officer Commits Drunken Hit-And-Run
An officer with the Hanover Police Department, who has been with the department since 2011, has been placed on administrative leave. After a Daytona 500 party, the police officer took a drunken spin. He thought he hit a snowbank and kept going. But in reality, he struck a person.
Off-duty police officer commits hit-and-run in Massachusetts
A police officer known as 36-year-old Thomas Hayes has been arrested for an alleged hit-and-run. He had a wild night that started with drinking at a Daytona 500 party. Then he and his friends made their way to a strip club.
He tried a Zyn nicotine pouch and felt sick. So he got in a friend’s SUV and started to drive home. Witnesses shared he was driving aggressively and begged him to stop after hitting something.
He claimed it was a snowbank and refused to pull over. The Ford Explorer had excessive damage, and his wife contacted a State Police Trooper.
The trooper went to the area where the incident occurred, and others were setting up a crime scene investigation. Unfortunately, 23-year-old Alfredo Alves was found unresponsive in the snowbank.
Officers arrested Hayes around 7 AM the next morning. The damaged SUV was still on his property, and there was a strong odor of alcohol. Also, surveillance video captured the Ford Explorer moments before the fatal collision.
Alves’ father shares, “Hayes did what he would do to a rock or any animal and took off. He could have saved him or stopped. No words can bring him back; we are in pain.”
According to CBS News, Hayes pleaded not guilty to charges of leaving the scene of an accident following personal injury or death and motor vehicle homicide. But he’s going to court in March.
