There is some good news and bad news for Nissan. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is closing its engine probe. However, over 444,000 vehicles like the Nissan Rogue now face a massive recall.
Nissan Rogue recall due to engine failure
Back in 2023, the NHTSA launched a probe into allegations of turbo engine failure in popular Nissan cars and SUVs. There were complaints about engine failure related to the Nissan Rogue and other popular models.
According to Auto Evolution, the problems were caused by defects in specific bearings and supporting components such as the A-, C-, and L-link bearings.
As Nissan introduced production changes to correct the issues, vehicles equipped with variable compression continued experiencing issues.
Then things intensified in 2025 as Nissan issued a recall for 443,899 vehicles. The recall includes 2019 – 2024 Nissan Rogue, Nissan Altima, Infiniti QX50, and QX55 SUVs and cars.
Documentation for the recall failed to include 12 reports of related fires/crashes caused by the turbo engine, and 1,878 incidents.
To correct impacted vehicles, dealerships will inspect the engines for metal debris in the oil pans. They will replace the oil pan as necessary and upload new software to the ECU module at no cost.
Those who already paid for these repairs might be eligible for reimbursement if they can provide proof of payment. The engine in question is the turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder unit that cranks out 201 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. Enter your VIN on the NHTSA site to see if your vehicle is under recall.
