Is your Ram 1500 running? That’s great, but hopefully it will stop. Over 1.2 million Ram trucks are being investigated due to a potentially deadly issue with the brakes. It’s related to two previous recalls that might not have been properly repaired.

NHTSA investigates Ram trucks for faulty brakes

All Ram trucks from 2013 to 2018 could have a deadly brake problem that needs attention. This includes about 1,187,232 Ram 1500 – 5500 Heavy-Duty models.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)  is investigating Ram trucks over a deadly brake problem that may not have been fixed during two previous recalls. Initially, the first recall was issued in 2017, and the second was in 2018.

The recalls were related to a solenoid that could overheat and swell. As a result, it prevents the locking pin in the column shifter from engaging. This allows the truck to shift out of park when the brake pedal isn’t depressed, allowing Ram trucks to roll away.

Stellantis replaced the bracket and solenoid in an attempt to fix the problem. However, the NHTSA alleges that this didn’t fix the root cause. The agency has continued to receive complaints of roll-away accidents.

Also, there are six death and injury reports related to brake transmission shift interlock errors. The investigation will determine if there is another problem that could impact the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) system.

Based on what investigators find, there could be a massive recall to address the problem. If this happens, hopefully the right components will be repaired this time around.

It might be a good idea to use the NHTSA VIN lookup tool to make sure your truck was repaired during the first two recalls.
