A New Jersey driver had to have his truck rescued after cameras caught it falling through the ice. The accident occurred while he was doing donuts on a frozen lake.

Naturally, video of the incident began circulating on social media shortly thereafter. In it, the driver was seen spinning around on the ice in his pickup truck at the Jersey Shore. During one spin, the rear of the truck appears to break through the icy surface and then get stuck there. The truck continued to sink until the ice almost completely submerged it.

The 44-year-old pickup truck driver managed to escape. However, he had no choice but to ditch the truck as it sank into the icy water. He reportedly didn’t have a valid license and never reported the accident.

“Stupidity at its finest,” Eagleswood Township Mayor Michael Pasternak told NBC 10 News. “It’s not something you should be doing.”

Emergency workers searched the scene because the driver never reported the accident

The next morning, someone called emergency workers to the scene at the Stafford Forge Wildlife Management Area, around 30 miles south of Atlantic City, after spotting the truck in the ice. Not knowing if anyone was trapped inside the truck, authorities dispatched three volunteer fire companies, two water rescue teams, a dive team, and EMS workers.

“They’re responding to a call where there may be a victim and, until they’re told otherwise, they have to treat it that way,” Pasternak said.

“It’s about more than you. You know, when you commit an act like this, when you do something like this, there’s a lot of other lives on the line,” Parkertown Volunteer Fire Company Captain Frank Runza, Jr. said. “It’s about more than you.”

Police charged the driver, who was not hurt, with reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and other motor vehicle offenses.
