Watch out, traffic in Washington, D.C., has new obstacles to avoid as the National Guard moves in. Some people are happy about the crackdown on crime, but other drivers feel inconvenienced. It doesn’t help that a National Guard vehicle trapped a driver inside their SUV either. 

National Guard vehicle traps woman inside SUV 

Police officers and other emergency responders responded to reports of a wreck at North Carolina Avenue and 8th Street SE. 

They were shocked to see that a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected All-Terrain Vehicle (MATV) slammed into a civilian vehicle. The silver SUV was crushed, trapping 

According to NPR, the vehicle weighs up to 16 tons, while the average weight of an SUV is between 3,500 and 6,000 lbs. 

It was one of five D.C. National Guard vehicles traveling in a convoy. It stopped as police officers arrived to help administer aid to the civilian driver. The driver was extricated by emergency responders and taken to the hospital with minor injuries. 

A witness yelled at the troops, asking them, “You come to our city and this is what you do? Seriously?” 

Samuel Pastore, neighborhood commissioner, shared that oversized militarized police forces are a nuisance. He said that kids are getting back to school and to get these tanks out of the streets. 

MPD spokesperson Michael Russo explained that the Metropolitan Police Department didn’t release a car report because there was no criminal defense. 

The cause of the accident is unclear. However, the incident is still under investigation by the D.C. National Guard.
