The 10 Most Stolen Cars in 2025 Were Crimes of Opportunity
The data is in: The most stolen cars of 2025 fit neatly into two categories. The first includes vehicles that became trendy to steal because thieves found them vulnerable. The second includes cars and trucks that have been wildly popular for decades. You can’t throw a set of lock picks without hitting one.
What rankings based on raw car theft totals miss are vehicles most commonly targeted relative to how many exist. Those include certain special-edition muscle cars and high-end trims. But first and foremost, here are the most stolen vehicles of 2025:

‘Most stolen’ vehicles of 2025
[1] Hyundai Elantra
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, thieves stole 11,329 Hyundai Elantras during the first two quarters of 2025. It was the only model to surpass 10,000 thefts in six months. That is striking because the Elantra was not the most popular vehicle sold in 2024, or even close.
So what gives? Autoblog explains, “Early versions without immobilizers were easy targets, and even though Hyundai has since fixed that issue and rolled out free security upgrades, thefts remain stubbornly high.”
As a result, insuring a Hyundai Elantra costs about 23% more than the average vehicle. There is some good news. The Elantra was the most stolen vehicle in 2024, but 2025 thefts are on track to fall by about 30%.
[2] Hyundai Sonata
During the same six-month period, thieves stole 9,154 Hyundai Sonatas. That helps explain why Sonata insurance rates sit roughly 21% above average.
The Sonata got swept up in the same theft wave as the Elantra. In late 2022, car thieves took to TikTok to demonstrate how to steal certain base-trim Hyundais and Kias. They called themselves the “Kia boys” and launched the “Kia Challenge.” Participants filmed reckless stunts before abandoning the cars. Unfortunately, Hyundai and Kia owners are still paying for that trend.
[3] Honda Accord
Thieves stole 8,531 Honda Accords in the first half of 2025. The simplest explanation may be volume. The Accord ranks as the third best-selling vehicle of the past 40 years, with roughly 13 million sold.
It trails only Ford’s F-Series trucks and Chevrolet’s Silverado lineup. However, the Accord’s popularity has faded. The Honda CR-V was Honda’s top seller last year, and the Accord did not crack the top 10. Many Accords still on the road lack modern theft protection, making them appealing targets.
[4] Chevrolet Silverado
By midyear 2025, thieves had stolen 8,006 Chevrolet Silverados. That made it the most stolen pickup truck in the U.S. The Ford F-150 held that title for years.
Why the shift? A lawsuit alleges some General Motors vehicles with keyless entry are vulnerable to “signal cloning” or relay attacks. The Silverado was the second best-selling vehicle in 2024, and Chevrolet has sold more than 17 million over the past 40 years.
[5] Honda Civic
Civic thefts averaged more than 1,000 per month during the first half of 2025, totaling 6,396. Older Civics are a major factor. Honda did not add engine immobilizers to the Civic until 2001.
That makes older models easier to steal, and there are a lot of them. Honda has sold more than 10 million Civics over the past 40 years. In 2024, it still ranked as the ninth best-selling vehicle in the U.S. Insuring a Civic costs about 14% more than average.
[6] Kia Optima
Kia Optima owners reported 6,011 thefts in the first half of 2025. As Autoblog notes, “The Kia Optima was one of the original ‘Kia Challenge’ targets on social media.”
Not only were these sedans vulnerable, but thieves preferred them for stunts and street takeovers. Kia responded with free steering wheel locks and a software patch. According to the IIHS, updated vehicles are about 53% less likely to be stolen.
[7] Ford F-150
Thieves stole 4,996 Ford F-150s in the first half of 2025. Until recently, it was the most stolen pickup in America.
Ford introduced a security app that allows owners to immobilize their trucks remotely. It appears to be working. The F-Series was the best-selling vehicle in 2024, and Ford has shipped roughly 23 million over the past 40 years.
[8] Toyota Camry
By the end of June 2025, 4,986 Toyota Camrys had been reported stolen. Insuring a Camry costs about 24% more than average, the highest on this list.
The issue is likely volume. Toyota sold nearly 12 million Camrys over the past 40 years. Even as buyers shift toward crossovers, the Camry remained the seventh best-selling vehicle in 2024.
[9] Honda CR-V
Thieves stole 4,889 Honda CR-Vs during the first half of 2025. It was the fifth best-selling vehicle in 2024 and the most stolen crossover of 2025.
Because most CR-Vs are newer, thieves rely on advanced methods like key-fob cloning rather than brute force.
[10] Kia Soul
In total, thieves stole 4,380 Kia Souls in the first six months of 2025. The Soul is less popular than vehicles like the CR-V or Toyota RAV4.
Its appearance here likely reflects the lingering trend of targeting Kia and Hyundai models rather than pure sales volume.
The specific trims thieves actually target most often
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tracks theft differently. Instead of total thefts, it measures how often specific vehicles are stolen relative to how many exist. In addition, the IIHS focuses on insurance claims for total losses, so it skips vehicles stolen and then recovered later. It also drills down into trim levels.
By that measure, some specialty vehicles stand out. For example, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is stolen at roughly 39 times the average vehicle theft rate. It’s highly desirable and the recently-discovered vulnerability for premium GM vehicles with keyless entry makes it a common target. Here’s the full list as of August 2025:
