Mitsubishi recalls nearly 100K vehicles across 27 states
Mitsubishi Outlander owners might want to pay close attention next time they open the rear hatch on their SUVs. According to the brand’s latest recall, almost 100,000 Outlander and Outlander Hybrid SUVs might have faulty tailgate components, increasing the risk of injury.
Mitsubishi is recalling 90,000 Outlander and Outlander Hybrid SUVs over potentially hazardous liftgate gas spring cylinders
Ever wonder how the rear hatch on your SUV remains suspended in the air while you load groceries, hockey bags? It’s typically a set of gas-filled cylinders. The cylinders use pressure to hold the liftgate and slow its descent so you don’t cause some serious damage.
Unfortunately for some Mitsubishi owners, their liftgate gas spring cylinders may be faulty. The faulty components increase the likelihood of injury from a falling rear hatch. Enter the company’s latest recall notice. NHTSA notice No. 25V507 cites potentially defective gas spring cylinders on 2018-2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid SUVs and 2014-2020 Outlanders.
According to the recall notice, “the cylinder of the tailgate gas spring, which contains high-pressure gas, could corrode due to salt water penetration. The high salinity of water promotes corrosion. If significant corrosion occurs over time, the wall thickness of the cylinder could be reduced, causing the gas spring to rapidly lose pressure.”
That, unfortunately, means the potential for a falling tailgate, which could strike operators in the head. The recall impacts 91,697 units registered in Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
If you suspect that your vehicle is included in this recall, you can verify your vehicle’s status with the NHTSA’s VIN lookup tool. The tool will also verify car seat and tire recalls. Although the NHTSA reports that the VIN will be searchable on the first of October.
Beyond that option, Mitsubishi says it plans to notify owners on October 6, 2025. As far as a remedy goes, Mitsubishi says it encourages owners to seek replacements of the faulty components. The brand says it will reimburse owners “for the cost of repair,” if necessary.
