Yusuf Benellal, a dealership owner and financing guru in Atlanta, Georgia, earned his followers by offering free and valuable car-buying advice. On occasion, he’ll answer followers’ calls to advise them. In a recent video uploaded to his YouTube channel (@RideWithYusufb), he called a follower back after she had messaged him multiple times.

Her problem wasn’t a unique one. She had her Mercedes E400 repossessed after she lost her job and fell behind on her payments by seven months. Since she’s an avid follower, she noticed he buys repossessed or wholesale vehicles at auction to sell at retail price.

The caller told Yusuf she hadn’t had a job for a year, had moved from Miami to Atlanta with her mom, and was “finally getting into a better financial situation.”

She figured she could persuade Yusuf to buy her Mercedes from auction and sell it back to her. To make her proposition even more shocking, she had no money to put down, her credit score was in the 500s, and she was paying close to $1,300 per month on her loan with 22% interest.

“I was kind of thinking if I get my Mercedes back I could refinance it and get the interest down,” she said. She said she was paid out by insurance after a recent accident she was involved in and wanted to use that to make her $1,300 payment on the Mercedes.

The entitlement was strong with this one

Yusuf makes it a point to keep his clients’ best interests in mind when he takes calls. So, he tried to point the caller in the right direction.

“You don’t think you should take the insurance payout, buy a cheap cash car to get your money up, find a job, take advantage of living at home with your mom, and then come back to me when you’re in a better financial situation?” he asked kindly.

“When you have a job, and your credit is better then we can get you into a different car with a much cheaper payment.”

It didn’t take much time for her to respond, “No, not really. I kinda really, like I said, I value the cars that I drive, and I really like that Mercedes. So, my goal is to get that car back.”

Yusuf still tried to help her despite her attitude

Benellal stuck to his guns and declined her request to buy her car from auction. However, he still tried to offer her advice.

“I think your priorities are all wrong,” he said. “The reason why I called you was because you were very adamant and messaging me multiple times… But you really don’t think you’ll be putting yourself in a bad situation?

“I’m just reminding you that if I buy it back, there’s no chance you’ll get approved for it – and even if you were approved – you’d still have a high-interest loan and pay over $1,000 per month when you don’t have a job.”

She held fast to her plan, and told him she’d have a job “by the time they went through the process.”

“I don’t feel like you’re really trying to hear what I’m saying,” he said.

The Mercedes-loving caller’s response shocked his followers

“Not really,” she said, irritation lacing her response. “Because I just wanted your help with that one thing. It’s cool, whatever. This was a waste of time.”

Then she hangs up on him.

“People like her keep the repossession business booming,” wrote a follower.

Another said her situation made them feel a lot better about themselves.

“Calls like these are like an antidepressant. You know what? I’m doing just fine,” they said.

Someone else made a joke about how “valuable” the car really was to her.

“‘I value the cars that I drive,’ just not enough to pay you car note for seven months to actually keep the car,” they wrote.
