Mercedes-Benz is downsizing. In a good way. Its latest SUV features G-Class looks with EV efficiency. You might think of it as the “Bronco Sport” version of the full-frame G Wagon.

Two months ago the automaker announced a “Little G” for the 2027 model year. Now, photographers finally spied a test mule.

The “Little G” keeps the full G-Class’s signature boxy style and old-school round headlights. It also has all three rows of windows and an exterior “spare tire” case, which will likely hold charging cables. But according to Mercedes’ Markus Schäfer, it won’t share a single exterior component with the big G-Class. “You know, I can’t even take a door handle from [the current] portfolio, because the G-Class has such unique door handles.”

One of the most striking features of the test mule is how short it is. It was driving behind a 5’ 6” EQS that absolutely dwarfed it. The traditional G-Class stands 6’4” tall. That said, the Little G may have adjustable air suspension, similar to the Rivian R1S. That SUV can lift up 6.5 inches to offer 14.9 inches of ground clearance while off-roading.

The unique construction of Mercedes’ “Little G”

Schäfer also told AutoCar that the Little G will have a “miniature ladder-frame chassis” which should be similar to the full G-Class s “when it comes to suspension and wheel size.” But it will not be a ladder frame to the G-Class’s “extent.” This could be a very similar construction method to current Land Rovers, which feature bracing similar to a ladder frame, cast as part of the unibody.

Mercedes has yet to discuss the little SUV’s powertrain, so we don’t know if it will be sharing electric motors or other components with the G-Class EV (G580 EQ) the automaker currently sells. But it’s doubtful it will pack the full quad-motor setup of that EQ.

Schäfer concluded, “We spent a lot of time tuning this car, and over time we started to develop so many unique components to make sure it’s a very good-looking car and very capable. You can see the spy shots in the video embedded below:
