Sometimes trucks can give people feelings. That’s why this passionate rant about General Motors trucks isn’t too surprising. A Mechanic must have been having a bad day when he shared that used car lots don’t want these trucks anymore.

Mechanic claims that General Motors trucks lack quality

TikTok user @chris.vaughn.tech has big feelings about General Motors trucks, including the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado. He says that used car shops don’t want these trucks anymore because their quality has gone downhill.

The passionate rant claims that all of these trucks have a lifter issue or a torque converter problem. Allegedly, the shop never gets models that are drivable or sellable.

He shows the interior of a 2020 model with 39,000 miles on it, and the torque converter is already bad. As an LS engine fan, he says the current models at the dealership are garbage.

Do GM trucks have torque converter problems?

Some General Motors trucks were issued a recall due to a torque converter issue. Models with the 6.2-liter V8 engine may have a manufacturing defect related to the connecting rod and/or crankshaft.

The recall includes model years 2020 – 2024. But the recall has been out for a while. Owners at risk should have been notified to visit a dealership for a free repair.

Models impacted by the recall can’t be legally sold until they have been corrected. It’s unclear if the model from 2020 in this TikTok video was included under the recall.

What do commenters think about GM truck quality?

Commenters shared that Silverado trucks have been junk for years and to stick to older models from 2015 or earlier. New vehicles have too many electronics that get in the way and increase prices these days.

People also shared that they think Ford trucks have the same problems as manufacturers allegedly cut corners. The happiest in the bunch of commenters seem to own Toyota trucks. One rogue person mentions their love of Nissan.

Is GM quality getting worse?

According to J.D.Power, the 2020 Chevy Silverado has a reliability rating of 82 out of 100. This score is above average.

Scores between 70 and 80 are average, while anything between 81 and 90 is above average. Anything between 91 and 100 is best.

Now the 2025 Silverado has a reliability rating of 84 out of 100. So, based on feedback from actual owners, Chevy trucks have been slowly improving. For comparison’s sake, the 2020 Ford F-150 has a rating of 78 out of 100.
