This content creator goes viral for pulling out his keys in the middle of driving and passes them off to the passenger.

Nowadays car keys have shifted away from being actual keys to fobs and smart keys. With new features getting popular like push to start, sometimes actual keys aren’t even needed to operate the car.

In a TikTok that’s generated over 334,700 views as of this writing, Liam Donafee (@liamslunchbox) showcases how his car keys were pulled out of his Honda Accord mid drive and the car continued to operate normally.

Will You Hold Onto My Keys Bro?

In the viral TikTok, the driver pulls off a shocking move while driving an older Honda Accord

“Yo bro will you hold onto my keys,” the driver asks.

The driver then proceeds to pull the car key out of the ignition while driving the vehicle on a busy road.

“Sure bro,” the passenger accepts the request.

He then hands the key over to the passenger and continues to drive without the key in the ignition. After accepting the key, the camera shows the busy road and how the car is still operating without the key in the ignition.

What is surprising about this move is typically car keys are not able to be removed when the car is in drive.

However, this car is an older model and appears to not lock the key in place when the car is in drive.

What Other Cars Can You Pull Out The Car Keys From The Ignition?

Viewers chimed in the comment section with different old car models that can also do this maneuver.

“2nd generation Dodge does the same thing. It’s great,” one TikTok commenter shared.

“My old Ford did this too, I freaked my friends out while they were drunk,” another added.

“My chevy can do it and it’s fine so I’d assume you’re good too bro,” a third replied.

“The Jeep liberty I had did that,” another added.

While other commenters were left in disbelief at what they witnessed in the video.

“My brain doesn’t understand this,” one commented.

“What actually happens when you pull out the keys,” one questioned.

What Happens When You Remove The Keys While Driving?

AutoVlog also tested out this same scenario with a 1994 Ford Ranger.

“Alright here we go, I’m going to take the key out,” he begins.

The driver proceeds to rip the key out of the ignition and the car continues to run fine. He then tosses the key out the window while laughing and driving.

“We’re driving without a freaking key in the ignition, that is so weird” he shares in disbelief.

The driver then pulls over and then begins to process what just happened.

“I didn’t know I was going to be able to turn off the car, be able to start it, and completely drive the car without the key,” AutoVlog shares.

One commenter chimed in on why this is possible.

“The reason behind this is the only thing the key needs to do on older vehicles, is just unlock the ignition pin to turn it. Which is why with old cars that have a broken ignition pin, you can twist the ignition and start the car with a screwdriver or even just your hands. If the ignition has those little nubs that come off to help turn it,” one commenter shared.

“It’s weird to know you have a vehicle that you can drive without the freaking key. I don’t need this key. The only real reason I need this key is to lock the doors,” AutoVlog concludes.

Additionally one Quora expert shared, “This means the key and/or lock cylinder are worn out.”

Can You Remove The Keys While Driving With Newer Cars?

Matt The Car Guy tries doing this with a newer car model in a controlled environment.

“I can’t take the key out of the ignition no matter how much I try, it’s stuck. It’s in gear and nothing happens,” Matt shares.

Matt discovers that newer vehicles will keep the keys inside the ignition unlike the older models.

“Good news is that if you tried to do this the car won’t stop automatically or the transmission isn’t going to explode,” Matt continues.

However, he advises to not try this out on a busy street due to the loss of power and acceleration.

“Don’t try this out at home,” Matt concludes.
