Imagine, you offer to help an older man clean out the ack of his Uhaul rental truck. While you’re inside sweeping up you hear the door slam shut and lock. This can’t be happening. Then he floors it and takes off, careening all over the road.

This bizarre nightmare came true for one New Mexico couple. They were helping 50-year-old Stacy Walker clean his Uhaul truck when he locked them inside. Then he took off. Authorities are withholding the couple’s names. But the man reported that after locking the door, Walker began “to swerve and drive in a reckless manner.”

The quick-thinking couple began to pound on the door and the walls of the box truck. They screamed for help. And someone heard them.

Around 8 AM on Thursday, April 10th, someone called the Santa Fe police department. They explained they’d heard banging from a Uhaul truck on Richards Avenue, near I-25. Police shared the call with multiple departments, and it was the County Sheriff’s Office that found the truck and signaled for Walker to pull over. Instead, Walker made a quick turn and nearly hit a cruiser.

The Santa Fe Police used a drone to follow Walker’s Uhaul truck. A Sheriff’s Deputy tried to lay out a spiked tire deflation device on Jaguar Drive. Walker must have seen it, because he steered for the deputy instead, and the officer had to run for safety.

Walker turned into oncoming traffic and nearly hit another cruiser. Eventually the police department was able to deflate his tires and Walker stopped on Herrera Street. But he was far from done.

Police heard pounding and pleas for help from the back of the Uhaul truck. They knew they needed to free the terrified passengers ASAP. They ordered Walker out of the truck. He refused. So one officer shot out his window to unlock the door. Still, Walker refused. So an officer shot him in the leg to subdue him. Finally, they dragged him from the truck and arrested him.

With Walker neutralized officers finally opened the locked Uhaul truck. The man reported he’d sustained a back injury during the chaotic chase. Police helped him and the woman out of the truck and took both to the hospital.

Walker rolled into court in a wheelchair. The judge examined his criminal past: numerous traffic violations, violence against a member of his household, and child abuse. Prosecutors argued, “If the defendant will not obey uniformed officers with lights and sirens, the defendant will not comply with any court orders.” They motioned to hold him until trial without bail. The judge agreed. You can see dashcam footage of the chase in the video below:
